INSTITUTE OF NEUROSCIENCES

SDMH has one of the biggest and best equipped departments of neurosciences in Rajasthan. Neurosciences  was established at SDMH in 1991. The department has evolved under the stewardship of Dr Suresh Gupta. Neurosciences comprises Neurology, Neurosurgery, Neurophysiology, various subspecialities, allied multidisciplinary services, neurorehabilitation and therapy units (physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, neuropsychology), dedicated neuro ICU facilities, diagnostic neuroimaging and dedicated highly skilled neuro nursing staff and neurointensivists.

Inpatient facilities include two in-patient neurology wards (with an acute stroke unit), a neurosurgery ward and dedicated neuroICU. A state of the art neurosurgical operation theatre is dedicated for neurosurgical and neurological interventions and surgeries. All forms of neurological and neurosurgical emergencies are treated within the Neurosciences department; acute neurosurgical emergencies (traumatic and non traumatic) are promptly catered to. The Neuro ICU has dedicated 10 neurosciences beds with ventilators, monitors, dedicated neurointensivists and neuroICU nurses.

Neurosciences at SDMH have a dedicated stroke (brain attack) service with a stroke unit; urgent neurological and neuroradiological assessment of stroke is routinely available with a view towards optimal and timely management of strokes; hyperacute and acute strokes are cared for with facilities for thrombolysis (if indicated); mechanical thrombectomy and carotid stenting for occlusive strokes are urgently available; post stroke neuro/vascular surgeries (including emergency craniectomy, haematoma evacuation; aneurysmal coiling/clipping; AVM embolisation/resections) are provided on an emergent basis if required.

There are also provisions for chronic care including neurorehabilitation (supported by rehab consultant, dedicated neurophysiotherapists, neuropsychology and speech and language therapy). The composite facilities in the Neurosciences department at SDMH have been recognised nationally and the National Board of Examinations has recognised SDMH for postgraduate studies (DNB) in both Neurology and Neurosurgery.

NEUROLOGY

Department of Neurology at SDMH is one of the premier dedicated neurology units in the state of Rajasthan. From 1991 it has rapidly grown into one of the biggest neurology facilities in the state. Keeping pace with recent advances, the department has acquired modern state of the art diagnostic equipments; in addition, excellent up-to-date therapies including thrombolysis (stroke clot busting), immunomodulation including plasma exchange, botox therapy for movement disorders, spasticity and headaches and surgical intervention in strokes are routinely available. These approaches ensure sound methods towards the diagnoses, investigations and treatments of various neurological conditions.

In recognition of the high standard of neurology at SDMH, the department has been recognised as a centre for postgraduate neurology studies by the National board of examinations for Diplomate in neurology (2 seats/year). The department is actively engaged in research and teaching (students, junior medical staff and DNB Medicine postgraduates).

The neurology consultants are experienced in general adult and paediatric neurology; individual members additionally have especial areas of subspeciality interests providing an unrivalled skill mix in dealing with even the most complex neurological conditions.
